ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Sharon Campbell
Each month, CrossFit Aiken recognizes a member who exemplifies our values and motivates others in the gym. We honor their accomplishments and look forward to seeing what they can do next!
It’s always the quiet ones you have to watch out for! Day in and day out, Sharon shows us what true grit and dedication look like. She’s the definition of consistency—always showing up, always putting in the work, and always bringing her positive attitude with her. She may be small, but her strength and determination are absolutely mighty!
Join us in celebrating Sharon this month—she’s proof that hard work pays off! Here’s Sharon in her own words:
Where are you from originally?
A suburb of Cleveland, Ohio
What did you want to be when you grew up and where do you work now?
I wanted to be a veterinarian but life threw me a curve ball and I got into Standardbred harness racing. I started out as a groom knowing absolutely nothing about the horse racing industry and worked my way up to a trainer, driver, owner & breeder. Now I’m retired.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I babysit my granddaughter and I try to garden.
What made you start CrossFit? What has kept you going? Has your motivation changed over time?
When I first heard of it my future son in law was really into it. My son was headed to The Citadel and he needed to get into shape and so did I so we decided to give CrossFit a try. I enjoy the friendships made here and the coaches that really care about everyone succeeding. My motivation was to get into shape when I started and now it is to stay physically fit because it is harder to keep any muscle mass the older I get.
What are your Fitness goals? Professional goals? Personal goals? How close are you to reaching them?
My fitness goals are always just trying to get better. Mostly my form and if I can add some more weight to the bar that is always a plus. I have no real goals except to stay as healthy and happy as I can while above ground.
What kinds of changes have you noticed since starting CrossFit?
My form during lifts has greatly improved. Instead of lifting things using my back I have learned to use my legs and the motion of them to lift heavy objects.
What have you learned about movement, fitness, and yourself through CrossFit?
I have learned that if my movements (form) is not good, I end up in the chiropractors office more, My fitness has increased a lot. I have more endurance and can lift more weight than when I started. I have also learned that each day is new start. Maybe yesterday I couldn’t do a movement correctly but now I can.
How do you make time for working out?
It is a priority. If I sit around for a few days in a row I don’t feel well physically or mentally. I feel a lot better when I’m moving.
What is your favorite healthy meal? Have your eating habits changed since starting CrossFit?
I like a salad topped with chicken or beef. I have not changed my eating habits because of CrossFit.
With everything that you have accomplished, has your view of yourself changed?
I feel fitter . I think I’m in better shape than most people my age and in better shape than a lot of people younger than me. I think the key to life is to Keep Moving! The old saying “use it or lose it” is true especially as we age.
What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with any similar struggles you did?
Just show up. Everyday is a day to try to improve.
What or who is an inspiration to you?
Everyone that comes to the gym. There is always a smile, laugh, grunt or groan but we keep showing up and encouraging each other.
